Photocopies of six documents relating to King, dated 1845-1851, and four original newspaper cuttings relating to his death. Includes: letter from the Mayor of Melbourne, Henry Moor regarding King's appointment as Town Clerk (1845); another letter from Henry Moor regarding King's journey to Sydney in his capacity of representative of the Corporation of Melbourne (1847); request from Victorian transportation abolitionists (the Australian League) led by the Mayor of Melbourne, William Nicholson (1851); letter from William Nicholson outlining King's responsibilities on his journey to England to achieve the abolition of transportation (1851); official notice accepting King's resignation, signed by William Nicholson (1851); petition from the Mayor and other councillors to Queen Victoria, regarding the establishment of a branch of the Royal Mint in Melbourne (1851), but with no mention of John Charles King. Includes also letter regarding donation and donors' names.

WorldCat record id: 225634259 John Charles King (died aged 52 years), was Town Clerk for the City of Melbourne in 1846 and later became General Manager of the Argus newspaper. Henry Moor was born in Greenwich, England, in 1809. He was the second Mayor of Melbourne. Preceded by Henry Condell, Moor served his first term from 1844 to 1845, and was su...
